Carnell carbon credentials certified to PAS 2080

Net zero highways is the ambition of the entire industry, and Carnell have demonstrated their commitment to decarbonising their operations by achieving PAS 2080 verification.

National Highways challenged their suppliers to ‘Implement a strong carbon management system aligned to PAS 2080 ahead of the third road period’ as part of their Net Zero Highways plan. Carnell are pleased to announce that they have achieved this target, as well as satisfying their clients requirements for reporting.

‘Carbon management in infrastructure’ is a global specification for managing whole-life carbon. The standard recognises organisations that have strategies in place to reduce carbon and make an important contribution to tackling climate change.

During a rigorous four-day audit by the British Standards Institute (BSI), Carnell were able to evidence how they actively look to create carbon savings at every stage of the project lifecycle. Fundamental to Carnell’s approach, was the development of a Carbon Management & Reduction Plan. Revised annually, this measures greenhouse gas emissions from all activities across the organisation. Benchmarked against data from 2019, this established targets for improvements and saw the creation of a roadmap, setting out how operations will be net zero by 2040.

Scope 1 Emissions make up 97% of Carnell’s carbon footprint. Tackling emissions associated with plant and compound operation has reduced these by 66% in three years and earnt Carnell a Green Apple Award as a result. The next step is to increase the use of electric vehicles in their fleet.

Danny Pitcher, Safety, Health, Environment & Quality Director at Carnell who developed their Carbon Management & Reduction Plan commented, “Receiving the PAS 2080 verification certificate is independent recognition of the efforts we have taken to reduce our environmental impact. We have seen a significant drop in our own emissions, while developing more collaborative ways of working to promote innovation, delivering benefit to society and communities.”
