Motorists may be familiar with this road sign, but many are left scratching their heads as to its meaning. The circular sign, which features a diagonal red line over a blue background, is one of the most puzzling for drivers.
In fact, it's a no waiting sign and as the name implies, it instructs drivers not to linger longer than necessary. While motorists can stop briefly, perhaps to let someone out, they should not wait any longer than required.
This sign is often found in bustling areas or at train stations, where maintaining traffic flow is crucial. Without additional information clarifying the sign's meaning, many drivers are left perplexed.
According to research by insurers Marshmallow, it's among the road signs that drivers find most difficult to identify. Motorists who are caught stopped or parked in no waiting zones could face a £70 fine if spotted by a traffic warden, and potentially receive three penalty points, reports Birmingham Live.
Adding to the confusion, many drivers struggle to distinguish between a no waiting sign and a no stopping sign, which features a red cross on a blue background.
Marshmallow experts explained: "Drivers are warned the no waiting sign means they can drop off or pick up a passenger in this area but only wait a short while. They are urged to avoid long waiting times and always check the times that the sign is enforced to avoid fines.
"The no stopping sign, often confused with the 'no waiting' sign, indicates that drivers are prohibited from stopping their vehicles under any circumstances in the designated area."
