35,000 drivers caught speeding in past three years across Teeside

The worst Teesside roads for speeding have been revealed with more than 35,000 offenders caught in the past three years.

A whopping £4m worth of speeding fines has been issued to local drivers in that period with more than £1m handed out in just the past year. Cleveland Police, which covers cover the districts of Middlesbrough, Stockton, Redcar and Cleveland and Hartlepool issued 10,726 NIPs (Notes of Intended Prosecution) to drivers between April 2023 and April 2024.

This compared to 9,017 the previous year and 15,629 in 2021/22. The data obtained by Legal Expert, via a Freedom of Information request, also revealed the top 20 roads where drivers are most likely to be caught speeding in the region - see below for the results.

Teesside's worst spot is on the A66 (W) at Whinney Banks, Middlesbrough, where 428 were caught in the past year. In Stockton, the worst spot was Queen Elizabeth Way with 373 speeding fines issued.

The A174 Lazenby Bypass was Redcar and Cleveland's worst spot with 386 caught. In Hartlepool, the most prolific road for speeding offenders was Powlett Road with 200 tickets issued.

According to Government guidelines, the minimum penalty for speeding is a £100 fine and three penalty points added to a driver’s licence. Motorists who receive 12 or more points within three years can be disqualified from driving.
